I'm living in Italy ,
here < a catholic country> BDSM is considered a real sick perversion of the human behaviour....and so all BDSMrs are hiding from the "public"...
this drives to a situation where we can not talk about a "BDSM COMMUNITY" but only about many people that occasionally gather in order to talk about their lifestyle or to play together.
it happens mainly via web (we have some forum dedicated) or meeting in private party (from 2 to 200 people) ...
there in US how is the situation?
are you more public?
I mean like gay community or also there you're a sort of hidden group?

Greetings to you and also welcome to the site here. My country is also mainly Catholic and BDSM is shunned as if it were something wrong or sick also. But thanks to public education via the web things are looking a bit better for the BDSM community here. over here in Canada and the US, it's also seen as a perversion. But there are plenty of people who are just fine with it, mostly younger people, and mostly in the cities. Places like Toronto or New york are a bit more open about it, although there will always be people attacking it.

Though it is kept more of a secret in the united states it is also open to an extent....W/we have clubs, partys, and dungeons in NYC...the big places that are more open are California, NY, Chicago and some small towns in other places.

It's very odd how the community is viewed in different places by the same group of people for the most part. I live in the Dallas area of Texas and the community is VERY strong, somewhat politically outspoken, and not many are still "in the closet" with their lifestyle choices. On the other hand, one of the girls I play with from time to time lives in a small town in Oklahoma about 200 miles from me and her thinking, while very open minded, is very much in the closet type thinking. Perhaps the fear of discovery is stronger in smaller towns than in large cities. I don't have any secrets and all my friends have some clue what it is that I do. The ones that really want to know will ask, otherwise, I just let their imaginations take it where it will.
